17 Jewel Hamilton “Barry”

17 Jewel Hamilton “Barry” wristwatch. It’s a 14K gold filled rectangular watch Circa 1945. It is most noted for its distinctive elegant style, fancy lugs, accuracy and reliability.

This timepiece has raised gold applied applied 18K hour markers and hands and a second hand in the six o’clock position.

Hamilton gold filled watches used the 980 movements until 1940-41. Before the Company introduced their 982 Medallion series 14K solid gold models used the 19 Jewel 982 movement. Gold filled watches continued to use the 980. After the introduction of the 982M, 14K gold filled models used the older 982 and 10K models continued to use the 980. This Barry is a 14K gold filled watch with an early 982 post-war movement providing us a way to date the timepiece. The balance has an Elinvar hairspring patented in 1931 and used in all movements thereafter. The name Elinvar was derived from the term “Elasticity Invariable” and was the first alloy to resist the changes in elasticity that occur with changes in temperature.
