The Ross came with either a copper dial or a standard Arabic numeral dial. Hamilton designed it with swept back lugs and a curved back. The inset portion of the dial is a silver-oyster color Butler finish. The rim is pure highly polished copper. It has 18K gold applied hands and inlaid Roman numerals. The case is 14K gold filled.
The “Ross” is a 1930’s watch made between 1937 and into 1941. Few have survived from its limited production run of approximately 11,000 units. Even fewer have survived in mint condition. Hamilton signed this particular wristwatch on dial, movement, and case.
This watch came with a 982 Medallion movement with cap jewels on the escape wheel, bearings and Elinvar ( “Elasticity Invariable”) hairspring. A previous owner replaced the original 982 movement with the 982M.
The Ross dimensions are 24mm x 37mm. It’s small across and has about an average length for a retro Hamilton square.
Estimated fair market retail value for this watch in 2012 is $495. Original cost was $52.50 in 1937 which adjusted for inflation equals $846.27. The average inflation rate per year is 3.78%.
