Hamilton’s Advertisement read:
“An accurate, durable, timekeeper constructed to stand the hard service to which a wristwatch is subjected. Especially designed for Army and Navy Officers, Aviators, Automobile Drivers, Civil Engineers and others who realize the advantage of a wrist watch in their occupations. This watch was tremendously popular with the American Exppeditionary Force and the U.S. Navy and we have never been able to meet demand for it.
“No. 981 -O-size, nickle, 3/4 plate movement, 17 fine jewels in settingsm Breguet hairspring, double roller escapement, compensation balance, adjusted. Cased in either round or cushion shape silver case.”
World War I saw a reluctant Hamilton watch company captitulate and begin manufacturing a “wrist watch for men”. The company did not have a strong motivation to manufacture wrist watches. Gentlemen needed to use pocket watches, they reasoned. They ducked the bad publicity by advertising wristwatches for rugged use. In 1923, they finally offered this model in 14K gold.
