Hamilton Watch Company 987 E Running Strong in Excellent Condition & Complete
Hamilton produced six movements referred to as 987 caliber. They’re 17 Jewel movements and evolved from their high-end smaller pocket watches.
Hamilton 987 movements can be found in wrist watches made from 1924-1948. When you begin to see a letter after the 987 it means the company upgraded the movement with the latest technology.
Hamilton stopped making the original model 987 in 1929 and introduced “improved jeweling” or what we call friction jeweling in the 987 F. The “F” stands for Friction Jewels. Hamilton introduced a Swiss-type Elinvar or alloy hairspring and denoted it as a 987 E. The “E” stands for Elvinar and means it’s not affected by changes in temperature and is non-magnetic.
The first three 987 movements had interchangeable parts, so a watchmaker could fit an Elvinar hairspring on the 1920’s model 987 or the early 987 F.
This 987 E is in superb condition. The balance begins to tick if you just pick up the movement. The wheels turn freely in their jewels and end-shake is excellent.
This is a rare Circa 1935-36 Hamilton movement. The company demasked the bridges and plates and used a generous coating of nickle.
The 987 E was the last 987 movement used in the company’s finest cases. It provides the best performance for the truly vintage Hamilton Company wristwatches.
Like the early Hamilton railroad watches, the 987 had the latest technology available and several enhancements made by Hamilton labs. Because of its advanced technology jewelers began replacing older 987 movements with 987 E models for their best customers’ watches.
This is a complete Hamilton Watch Company 987 movement. Please do not consider this a parts watch. This is a drop-in replacement for any 6/0 Hamilton case. It doesn’t need service.
It’s complete with minute wheel, canon pinion, jewels, stem and crown.
