Do you see the listing error?
This was an auction for a good 987 1920’s watch. Several valuable items exist here. First, the movement is a 987 – not a 987 F. If it was a 987 F that would not have bothered me at all. However, many Hamilton watch buyers have a bias toward any 987 style movement with a letter after it. (See previous post).
The movement has a good balance – invaluable because I never see a NOS 987 balance in the original packing. You certainly couldn’t buy one for $20 if you could locate one. A complete set of hands that fit a 987 watch is another big plus. You couldn’t find those for $20 either. Finally – the stem. Another item that’s impossible to find in NOS. In most cases, a watchmaker would have to make one – especially if the stem is worn. That’s another $20. The crown? – that too!
This is a good buy. Now, if you look hard, you can see why I bought it and had a JustSnipe bid waiting on the sidelines if someone tried to out do me.
Maybe the NFL football games, the election and the big storm on the East Coast had buyers’ attention. Who knows? I underlined some important items you should have noticed in this auction. Here’s the listing notes:
From a retired watchmaker we have a 1928 model 987F 6/0 size 17 jewel Hamilton wristwatch. The nickel movement looks good and the balance swings freely. One of the winding wheels along with the screw is missing. When a slight wind is done the movement will run but not long. I do not know the last service date. The white gold case is marked 14k gold filled and looks nice with just normal wear on the back. The crystal is present as are the hands.
