1926 Hamilton Cut Corners [Square] gents wristwatch with bezel engraving.
Hamilton began producing wristwatches in 1917. This is one of the first Hamilton strap wristwatches to use the 987 movement. Like the other early Hamilton wristwatches it came in limited quantities. Hamilton made two versions of the Cut Corners wristwatch: plain and engraved in either 14K white and green gold filled. Hamilton marketed this watch in 1926 for $57. They also sold a 14K solid gold version for $85 and $87, respectively. Hamilton’s prestige brand commanded a premium between the 1880’s through the early 1950’s. In 1920 dollars the Cut Corners wristwatch also commanded a premium price.
Fahys produced the case for this watch. The one shown here is 14K green gold filled.
The movement is a Hamilton 987 6/0 size with 17 ruby and sapphire jewels, with monometallic balance wheel, nickel plate and bridges and precious metal plating. The 987 has double roller escapement, improved stem work, improved friction jewelling.
The Hamilton timepiece is one of the company’s six geometrically shaped wristwatches popular between 1917 and 1927. The geometric models included the Cushion, Square, Barrel, Tonneau, Rectangular, and Oval.
